How do I know if the refrigerator water filters expire or not?

The refrigerator water filters do not have an expiration date, but they should be stored away from chemicals, moisture, and extreme temperatures to maintain their performance. It is advisable to purchase a super value package  to enjoy a discount on each filter.

What is the lifespan of a refrigerator water filter? Why is it necessary to replace it?

It is recommended to change your water filters every six months. As the fridge water filters become saturated with contaminants over time, it can lead to reduced water flow and poor filtration capability. In addition, newly produced bacteria will accumulate on the fridge filter, which poses a health risk to the quality of your drinking water and ice. Meanwhile, bacteria can survive below freezing temperatures, meaning ice and water can also become contaminated. If the refrigerator filter has been soaked during its initial use, it should be replaced every six months thereafter, unless otherwise specified.

Why does the water taste strange even when I just install a new filter?

If you have recently replaced a new refrigerator filter and the water tastes funny, it is likely caused by compressed air bubbles in the filter that are released into the water. We suggest you get rid of the first gallon of water and subsequent gallons should be bubble-free.

Do you have any troubleshooting advice for a leaking filter?

If you’re suffering from a filter leakage, try opening the filter compartment to check that the O-ring is correctly positioned in the groove. If the O-ring is in place and the filter still leaks, coat it with a thin layer of vegetable oil to help create a seal.

How do I know if my fridge has a built-in filter?

Most side-by-side refrigerators have a built-in water dispenser and ice maker with a filter. If your fridge is not side-by-side, check the following areas for your filter:

  1. Inside the fridge: Check a cylinder filter canister that hangs from the top of the fridge. You will find the filter in the upper-right corner.
  2. Inside the fridge: The refrigerator water filter might descend or glide out of the ceiling compartment.
  3. Bottom of the fridge: The filter can be found in the front grille at the base of the refrigerator.

Do I need to lubricate the gaskets on my filter?

Generally, you do not need to lubricate the gaskets of refrigerator water filters, but older Frigidaire models have O-rings that could benefit from lubrication. If the filter does not include a package of lubricant, we suggest applying a small quantity of vegetable oil to the O-ring to facilitate the filter replacement process and prevent leaks.

What are the signs that indicate the filter has been correctly installed?

All filters will come to a halt after being tightly installed. If you install the filter manually without using any tools, you should be able to feel the filter reach the stop point when it is correctly installed. Typically, most filters come to the stop point after a quarter or a half turn. However, the GE MWF unit needs a more forceful turn to ensure the O-ring is sealed properly, so turn the filter a bit harder.

How do I reset the indicator light that reminds me to change the filter?

The process of resetting the indicator light may vary depending on the manufacturer. Below are instructions for popular brands, but if your brand is not listed here, please refer to the product page of the particular filter for specific instructions:

  1. Frigidaire: Press and hold the reset button on the water dispenser until the green light flashes, which could take up to 15 seconds.
  2. GE: Push and hold the Reset Water Filter button on the dispenser for 3 seconds.
  3. Whirlpool: Press the light switch on and off quickly 5 times within 10 seconds. If your model has a Filter button, push and hold it for 5-10 seconds.
  4. Samsung: Simultaneously press and hold the Child Lock and Ice Type buttons for 3 seconds. If you hold the buttons for longer than 3 seconds, the reset function will stop, so make sure to release them and repeat the process if needed. The water filter indicator light will turn green once the reset is complete.
